What's On Your Ballot?
It’s important to know what’s on the ballot and how the responsibilities and powers of the seats up in the election can impact our community here in Edgehill. This is a brief overview of the seats that are on our August ballot to help you be more informed. Please note this guide will not go over any specific candidates, but be curious and look up further details on the candidates running and further details on the open seats.
President & Vice President
It is extremely important to have someone as President and Vice President that actually can do the basic requirements of each office as well as have the capacity to take criticism, listen, and act in the best interest of the country and not themselves which is why Let’s Vote It Up recommends voting for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for President and Vice President.
US Senate (TN) & US House of Representatives TN Congressional District 5
We have one US Senate seat and one US House of Representatives seat up for grabs in this election. The Senate and the House together makes up Congress as a whole. Congress votes on bills to become laws easily affecting us here in Edgehill on policies on many subjects of public concern such as Education, Healthcare including but not limited to: Medicare, Medicaid, and the ACA, the Economy via the federal Minimum Wage and Taxes, Assistance Programs like WIC, SNAP(Food Stamps), Social Security, and the Covid-19 pandemic response & relief, as well as Public Housing through setting the thresholds for Income-Based Rent and it’s requirements.
We need to carefully choose someone to both seats in this election that will actually serve us because they will be in a position to pull for the policies, laws, and resources at the national level that will better address our needs to help us thrive which is why Let’s Vote It Up recommends voting for Marquita Bradshaw for the Senate and Jim Cooper for the House the Democratic candidates for these seats.
TN House of Representatives District 58
TN House of Representatives is a part of TN’s General Assembly which is like Congress but on the state level. Representatives are directly elected to 2-year terms from the district they will serve. We here in Edgehill are a part of State Representative District 58 and our seat is up for election. The major power of TN House of Representatives that can affect us here in Edgehill greatly is together with the State Senate they can enact, amend, and repeal laws on the state and county levels on variety of areas including but not limited to: Education, Economy & Taxes, Criminal Justice, Healthcare, Infrastructure & Transportation, Safety, Housing. Its important to choose a candidate that will be accessible, will listen to us and will be willing to go to bat pushing for legislation that we actually need and fighting legislation that will hurt us (or at least be the gum in the works in that regard) which is why Let’s Vote It Up recommends voting for Harold Love for this seat.
TN Republican Executive Committeeman District 19, TN Democratic Executive Committeeman District 19, & TN Democratic Executive Committeewoman District 19
The Executive Committeeperson(s) are seats that serve in a board for their parties. These are not government offices or seats but seats that are in the Republican or Democrat parties themselves at the state level. The Executive Committee ensures that the respective party is running, helps set the tone and strategies for the party to advance, as well as help candidates from the party get elected. This seat indirectly affects us here in Edgehill as this represents a way that we can affect either party’s personal and direction. It’s important to note that you will only see the Democratic Committeeperson seats if you choose the Democrat ballot and the same if you choose the Republican ballot. Even though our district’s Democratic Committeepersons are running unopposed Let Vote Up still recommends voting for Katharine Harris and Eric Brown for their respective seats.
